INSIGHT- WHAT IS A FRIARY (CURIA)

A Friary is a brotherhood of male members of a religious order. They do service work for the community. They are supported by their religious organization and/or the community (in medieval times they used to go around carrying a begging bowl for food). They wear brown robes that are tied around the waist with a rope. Each knot in the rope signifies one of their vows, which are poverty, chastity, and obedience [via the Society of St. Francis website].
